Wowie... it's already been a year since the launch of NOISZ STΔRLIVHT—the rhythm game x visual novel x bullet hell mobile game that I have the honor of singing for as Asuka of idol group SUNRaiSE. ☀️

To celebrate, both groups SUNRaiSE and STΔRLIVHT came together for a collab track called "Clash of Twilight!" It's a cool song filled with cryptic lyrics referring to the game's story, which btw really keeps me on my toes and after every chapter I just want to find out more. The devs have poured a lot of passion into this fantastic game. Also love that all of the vocalists, plus Malcolm who's behind the videos, are all from the youtaite community. ❤️

STΔRLIVHT: Grace (k*chan) / Sera (Angela) / Sumire (KT) / Hakuno (Leon)

SUNRaiSE: Shion (Niko Vargas) / Asuka (Eva) / Hikari (Phoebe)

We're actually running a Kickstarter right now where you can buy some merch including a CD of the entire game's soundtrack! It's super freaking cool how many members of the youtaite community have participated in it—beyond the idol group cast there's also chiisana, fome, and Miyolophone in the song credits! We're all on an album together!!! Too cool!!

SUNRaiSE has two songs which you can check out below!!
Both are bright, hype-inducing, uplifting songs! The notes in "Parhelion" were crazy high to sing haha. To be fully honest I'm not satisfied at all with how I characterized Asuka's singing voice and wish it were more unique. ;;

Rise Above (Music Video) / Soleily ft. SUNRaiSE

Parhelion (feat. SUNRaiSE) / Reku Mochizuki

I actually uploaded a playthrough/reaction video of the first time I played Rise Above in the game... 😳 Been meaning to film again while playing Parhelion, combine the two parts, and upload onto my vlog youtube channel, but...yeah my backlog of things to do is huge lol...

NOISZ STΔRLIVHT Release Celebration Live

Finally, here's the official VOD of our livestream that we did one year ago for the launch of the game! I wrote about it in-depth in this post, but the entire idol cast went on stream as vtuber models of our characters—a huge challenge for me to conquer due to my stage fright and throat issues. But it was fun. And we did it. We did that!

This VOD was also edited by me! I added the subtitles and song names and tried to smooth out some of the technical issues we had. After the stream I just couldn't bring myself to listen to what I'd sounded like (EMBARRASSING!!!) so you can bet... much screaming and cringing happened while editing this .....

PS: Wait omg, I can start an "original music" tag for this post... Still going to tag it as a collab cover though even if that's inaccurate heh.

I've a few longer posts in progress, no time lately to sit with them, so a quick update for now!

New fandub new fandub ✨

My friend Mii suggested we do a Genshin voice acting collab together and we thought this fanmade MMD skit of Mona and Layla was hilarious (it's sooo good) so we got permission from the animator Monolithia to dub over it. 🙏

I believe this is the most viral tweet I've ever been involved in...? It was so shocking to wake up to—as of posting, it has 400 retweets and 1700 likes. 😳 Though judging from the replies from randos, I think most viewers are simply fixated on how amazing the animation is (rightfully so) rather than admiring our voice acting but welp.

(also on TikTok)

A fun little project! Mii is such a wonderful match for Layla—I'd always described her voice as soothing, smooth, and pretty... Soft... I could listen to her speak forever.

I'd never tried doing a Mona voice before so this was an interesting challenge; my first fandub with such a nasal tone. Not totally satisfied with the "Go to sleep!!" because I had to choose between shouting to emote the line correctly, or maintaining the somewhat soft and textured timbre I wanted to emulate from Mona's Japanese voice (I'm not experienced enough yet to shout while controlling that) plus keeping in mind the character's levelheaded personality... In the end I chose the take that sounded more "Mona" to me, sacrificing projection and emotion, but it's okay—it's a reference point for when I improve one day, right?!

Ehe a new post for my voice acting tag~ Another short Genshin Impact fandub—this time as a collab with Kuroノ who is one of my friends that I hang out with irl!

Twitter embed is very fickle—if it's broken, here's the direct link to the tweet and backup on YouTube!

---

Kurono posted a fantastic fandub of Kazuha back in July of last year (he did the entire thing and it's both timbre and acting perfection 👌👌), so we thought it'd be fun to collaborate on a fandub of something together—and so when Ayaka's trailer came out a week later featuring Thoma......!!

First of all, our friends and I all thought Kuro would already be a natural effortlessly good fit for Thoma and we were so right LOL. Good neighborly puppy boy energy!! But also slightly sassy yet dependable!! Kuro was able to record that lightning fast yet sounded "as flawless as ever;" I was so impressed ahaha. What a pro. So yes... he recorded that in July... on the same day the trailer came out.......

Cut to: me struggling to reach the Ayaka voice that I wanted to go for, trying it over many days through into August as a lower priority venture under my other projects, my voice wearing out quickly during the recording sessions both due to the whispery timbre (my ENT told me whispering is super harsh on your throat...) and unfortunate external reasons.

This was happening around the time I started realizing something was wrong with my throat... ;;;; I felt so bad for Kuro because something that was supposed to be quick and spontaneous got dragged out for so long—I told him and myself that I'd pick up trying to record better takes for this again once my throat felt better. In the meantime I finished up all the lines I owed and went on a recording hiatus... It fluctuated for a bit and then I watched my throat get even worse and worse.............

Now in February, I'm still waiting for it to get better. :/
(My reflux and allergy medications might not be effective enough for me, sigh, fingers crossed my ENT appointment next week will create some progress.)

So yeah, I went back to all of the B-tier takes that I saved but wasn't entirely happy with and performed extremely detailed surgery to stitch some syllables together and make something post-able at last! Also nixed two lines that I had no good takes for. I do feel that I didn't reach my vision for Ayaka's voice and my pronunciation bothers me, so I consider this an "incomplete version."

---

Again I find it really interesting how the official voice actors for the various languages in Genshin take pretty different directions in characterization. Despite them being quite different, I genuinely really really really like both Hayami Saori and Erica Mendez as variations of Ayaka—they both did such an amazing job and sound very pretty. 😭

Hayamin of course has the perfect princess voice that's simultaneously "out-of-your-league" and "little sister" and she carries such a soft warmth and effortless whispery tone (LITERALLY, PHYSICALLY HOW??). I enjoy how her characterization includes some playfulness—the way she often sounds like she's slightly laughing feels so friendly, open, and affectionate. She's precious but also strong and reliable when need be. I could listen to her voice all day long.

Erica's version of Ayaka also has a really pleasant, airy, soft timbre that I was happy that they pulled off because I rarely hear such a tone in English dubbing. Her voice acting conveys so much all at the same time: Ayaka's seriousness as an important member of society and sword master (the English characterization seems to lean into this aspect the most?), formality, tradition, tranquility, yet still with a hint of the childlike purity that Ayaka has. It's so good. Compared to the Japanese version, the English Ayaka seems much more confident and strikes me as more of an observer than an experiencer.

(Btw I was especially impressed upon realizing she's also the English VA of Nico from Love Live, that insane range...!! Another side note, I love Christian Banas' Thoma as well—he does such nuanced performances and makes him so wholesome and energetic. 🥺)

"there can only be one"

For my rendition of Ayaka, I tried out several approaches—it started out comparatively closer to Erica's version and I did kind of a throat'y voice—but I ended up wanting to challenge myself to inch a bit closer to Hayamin's portrayal that was whispery, higher medium tone, slower, less confident, a "cool" timbre that has a grainy texture to it but warmer and slightly rounded delivery, a delicate balance of inserting some fullness into the voice while also remaining light. In the second half I wanted to slip in some of that openness and subtle playfulness into it. Also I didn't want it to feel like the exact same direction I did for Ganyu (though there's a lot of overlap)—I wanted my Ayaka to comparatively be a bit more grounded and full, yet more inflated with air, decisive, and less sweet. YES I THOUGHT ABOUT THIS A LOT LOL. AND NO THE EXECUTION WASN'T SATISFACTORY.

Aside from the pronunciation, one of my regrets is that I couldn't get "Spar with me some more" to hit that ideal balance of playful and assertive. And also unfortunately I'm not Hayamin herself 😔 Oh whales, I'm ultimately still fairly happy with what I achieved and am fond of this collab with Kuro. ^^

This was the toughest thing I've ever tried to voice act!!! And I will probably never attempt such a whispery voice again in my entire life because boy, it do not cooperate with me throat!! Please enjoy as it will never happen again!!!

It takes two to tango~

Um, life has been exploding so there’s tons to catch up on, but for now here's a baby step of an update........!

After my Ganyu and Hu Tao fandubs, the next Genshin Impact character I was interested in trying to voice act as was Eula! There's plenty about her for me to like—from her design, to being an ice element knight, her solemnly satirical personality, her regality yet rejection of it, her tallness and subsequent cosplayability lol—however the thing that immediately drew me to her was that she’s voiced by Asian-American VA Suzie Yeung who also plays Yuffie in FF7R!!!

It may be because I’m not too familiar with the VA scene but I only know of a couple of Asian-American voice actresses… And within Genshin’s large sprawling English cast, I believe there’s only one actress who's of South Asian ethnicity—and then Suzie Yeung makes the first East Asian actress in the lineup! Honestly pretty disappointing considering Genshin relies heavily on Chinese and Japanese culture, but yay Suzie!!

She does such an amazing job too; I love love love her voice and what she breathes into Eula at a delicate balance of the character's different facets. It’s such an inspiration to me, as an East Asian-American who’s only recently starting to learn that my speaking can be valid too. The very moment I learned of Suzie’s casting, before any teasers had been released, I decided that I must attempt a fandub of something hahaha.

Initially tried part of her tavern scene but it was much too hard to pull off the right feeling and tone.. Of course there’s going to be a gigantic skill gap between me and a professional, but still loads of respect for all that Suzie can do that I struggle with m(_ _)m

The change of plans turned out to be a blessing because I landed on doing the scene that features Amber and was able to pull in chiisana to be my partner 💕💕 Blessed by the cutie goddess!!! I knew she’d be perfect because she’s always done fandubs as Tohru from Fruits Basket and the new Tohru seiyuu in the reboot also voices Amber, so it all comes full circle hehehe.

😫 Isn’t chiisa just the cutest…!! Doesn’t she make you want to sweep her off her feet..?! Nothing against the way Amber's ENG VA portrays her, but I think chiisa does an amazing take on Amber that's reminiscent of Manaka Iwami's preciousness.

Personally I don't think I'm able to represent the different facets to Eula well yet—I played her rather straightforwardly but wasn't happy with any of my redo attempts to introduce her hint of sarcasm/irony....... Still, I think this is my fandub I've been proudest of so far. :) I genuinely really enjoy it and the dynamic between me and chiisa in this! It's satisfying how I don't sound anything like my normal way of speaking and feels as if I was able to transform into someone else while shedding a lot of my accent. The progress that I've made is showing ^^

Also. . . . bloopers.

NO I DON't dare smear the name of actual VA's by claiming to be one--- dksjkfj

Fun fact: when my first youtube account 'waterpixie' was suspended and I came back as 'waterpixieva,' there was a bit of confusion about whether it was meant to indicate that I was going into voice acting but nope it's just my name. 😅

I've been having a lot of fun doing a couple of spontaneous small projects in between my larger ones now that I have a break from urgent matters... like, a lot of fun. I always struggle with motivation so I think I really am the happiest when I have these little rare moments filled with sparks of inspiration ✨—and it's so gratifying to get to jump right in and see that passion through. Plus they're less pressure and actually get done quickly so I can move on before it has the opportunity to burn me out LOLOL

In January, I did a Genshin fandub clip with myself as Ganyu and my wonderful, precious friends Mimi as Paimon and Chiisana as Lumine—and I wrote a bit about what influenced me to gather the courage to record it, how unconfident I was about the whole thing, how I almost scrapped it...

To be frank I've always hated my speaking and while I like making vlogs I can never bear to rewatch them with sound on hahaha. I especially loathe my accent and my muddled, slurred way of enunciation. Admittedly it's been on my mind more lately as I watch my friends dive into the world of streaming which I dare not touch. But I've been finding that when I "voice act" ... it's like I can turn on a switch and make my timbre more bearable and hone in on improving my enunciation—and also redo it over and over and edit as I see fit. Then I don't hate my speaking as much! And recently after seeing how Khoi Dao has embraced his accent, it's made me feel like maybe it's not such an evil!!

Posting that clip, talking with my friends, and receiving an unexpectedly insane amount of compliments??????????? @___@ really gave me a huge confident boost.... Might I even say it was life-changing HAHAHA. Now I have a new little hobby that I enjoy doing and am working at improving in ;u; And you know what: I didn't realize until this very moment that it makes sense given that my favorite thing about singing is expressing emotions so this isn't too far off!

---

A week ago after clearing some obligations, I treated myself to trying out part of Ganyu's character teaser which I've really liked since it came out 🥰 Interestingly, all of Ganyu's four VA's in different languages had varying approaches to the joke at the end but I was especially stirred by the Japanese version with Ueda Reina—I just adore how she goes from pensive [bait] to playful while being soft and sweet and a little awkward!

(I also attempted the Paimon line—which btw is supposed to be "no way!"—though I can't quite yet produce a suitable Paimon timbre heheh)

And then two days ago Genshin released the official first look at Hu Tao and IMMEDIATELY I WAS TAKEN IN BY HER ENGLISH VOICE.... Her voices in all languages are delightful !! and tHE CHEEKY DARK HUMOR......... Homegurl is the director of a funeral parlor joking about the death rate of adventurers and offering us discounts 💀

I thought I'd just try it out because there's a lot of room to play with inflections and then before I knew it, I was seriously working at it and having a lot of fun..! It was much, much harder than the Ganyu clips ahah. Also my past two attempts left a lot of regrets over my pronunciation which I've been trying to work on so I'm much more pleased with how I did here. Kinda proud! I do think I'm missing something in the timbre to suit Hu Tao but overall surprised myself by exceeding my own expectations!!! ⭐️⭐️

(the gremlin snickering isn't part of the original script; it just kinda came out... hurhurhrurhur)

SCREAMS this wasn't on the agenda aT ALL but ..... instead of sleeping at a responsible time last night I was spontaneously inspired to try voice acting. As Ganyu, the new ice archer chara that just came out in Genshin Impact! Lolol leading up to her release, I somehow had very little interest in her but the more I got to know her.... who am I kidding, she's an ice archer—I was never meant to stand a chance. 🥺 She's also kind and hardworking and wise and beautiful...

After playing her story quest, I fell in love with her Japanese seiyuu's soft, sweet voice so I thought it could be fun to try my own take of Ganyu in English ;v;.. It's surprising how different her Eng VA's approach is to her personality—it's more rigid, cold, and unapproachable. AND THEN AAA two of my closest friends mimi and chiisana agreed to record on a whim too! Honestly I have absolutely no aptitude for voice acting and almost scrapped this entirely before even asking them but mimi and chiisa are way, way too perfect for their parts so this feels extremely precious; I'm happy we did this. 😭 Thus the first yolo Gemini girls' fandub was born:

Also would like to give credit to Albedo's Eng voice actor Khoi Dao for being the inspiration that gave me the courage to try this ;; English is his third language and now he speaks it so well...!! Here a link to him talking about his journey with trying to fix and then learning to accept his accent. So awe-inspiring. I wish him every success and also he's super funny; I am a fan of this dude now.

PS: Wowow I get to make a "voice acting" label!! Also tagging "mixing" because this surprisingly took a lot of complex audio mix work 😳 A whole lot of EQ, multiband compression, and even frequency spectrogram work.. but I'm really pleased with how the mix came out considering it was my first time! I learned so much about VA even from this very short clip ehe
